Matiu Wereta, a boy who was assaulted in his Hastings home has died of critical head injuries after being in intensive care for three days.
Matiu’s family has released a statement saying that he was a “happy, smiley, and adventurous boy.”
“This is a very difficult time for us as we go through the grieving process and take in the events of the past few days,” said Matiu’s family in a statement. “We have a very supportive whanau around us and are being supported by our local community.”
The family said that their little boy “loved being active and getting involved in a lot of activities.”
A 17-year-old make has already been charged with assault at the Hastings District Count on Tuesday. He was remanded on bail to reappear next month. He was also granted interim name suspension.
“We appreciate all the kind wishes and support we have been offered from many people. This is a tragic event that is extremely hard for any family to comprehend or experience. We must now wait for the judicial process to take its course,” said the family.
The uncle of the accused teen said that his nephew told him he had been showering with Matiu, when the little boy ran out and fell down the stairs. He added that the police would conclude that the death had been an accident.
